Isabel Vargas Lizano, also known as Chavela Vargas, was a Mexican (originally from Costa Rica) ranchera singer who was branded as having “La voz áspera de la ternura.” She is best known for the songs “La Llorona” and “Paloma Negra.”
She publicly came out of the closet at the age of 81, despite her sexuality being an open secret. Rumor has it that she was in a clandestine affair with fellow icon Frida Kahlo.
